Artist's Comments

For this painting we were to choose an image out of a National Geographic magazine to reproduce using paint. We were given access to only the primary colors, black, and white.

I chose an image of a volcano somewhere in South America. As is unfortunately typical for me, I ended up with one of the hardest pictures to paint. I had to come to the art room and paint outside of normal classtime in order to get it done on time.

I was unable to duplicate much of the texture on the rocks. Also, I think I should have used a much darker brown, or perhaps even black for the section of the volcano towards the top of the painting. It's obscured by smoke and gasses from the volcano, so I couldn't tell exactly what color to use beneath them. Speaking of the smoke, I'm really glad (and somewhat suprised) about how well it turned out. I've never tried to paint anything like it before, so I was worried about how it would look.

I could definitely notice while I was painting it how much better I've gotten at mixing colors to get just the right one and blending them into each other in the painting itself since I started this class. You might not be able to tell from looking at it, but, trust me, this was much easier for me to do than, say, when I made my tint painting at the beginning of the class.
